Quake on the Lake

What is Quake on the Lake?  Quake on the Lake (QotL) is a yearly LAN event that combines a LAN Party with an exciting vacation for the whole family.  Take a week off in the summer with us and spend your days golfing, hiking, white water rafting, or exploring the city, then come home for dinner and spend the evenings playing LAN games with your friends.

How did QotL get started?  For a number of years, the group made an annual trip to Dallas, TX for QuakeCon.  However, while a 3000 person LAN Party is cool and all, it ended up being more of the same every year and we decided to create our own event with some more variety.  Quake on the Lake is something new each year, family friendly, longer, and typically involves less travel than our trips to Dallas.

When and Where is the next QotL?    Seven Springs PA   July 20-27

How much does QotL cost?    $500 per person.

How and When do I have to pay?  You can pay Mike using one of the following methods

  • Paypal (mhallida at gmail dot com)
  • Venmo ( link )
  • Zelle
  • Cash/Check in person.

If you pay by paypal or app, make sure you account for any fees imposed by the service.

What all is included in my payment? Your payment includes access to the 24/7 BYOC LAN Party, most meals for the week, water/soda, and probably a T-Shirt (like last year we will try our best to get these done in time).

What is not included in the payment? Bawls, Alcohol, Travel costs (including lunch on travel days).  Extra activities such as golf, amusement parks, etc are not included in the LAN payment.  We usually eat at a restaurant on the last full day of the event.  This meal is not included.

Do couples get a special rate?    Usually rates are based on bedroom availability.  Couples can expect to pay separately for each other, but not extra for kids, assuming they will stay in the same room.

Can I get a special rate if I am staying for only part of the event?  Usually we are able to offer lower rates if you are not staying the entire event, but priority will be given to those who are.

What food will be served?  Typically summer meals like burgers, grilled chicken, spaghetti and tacos.  If you choose not to partake in the LAN dinners, there will not be a discount to the price of the event.  Attendees will be asked to help with 1 or 2 meals.  Either cooking or clean up.

If a lot of people come, and you make more money than it costs to rent the house, are you just going to pocket the money? QotL is a not-for-profit event.  Excess money is used for QotL swag and/or purchasing equipment for the LAN.  Sometimes we lose a little money on the event.  If that is excessive, you may be asked to pitch in a little extra.  Thanks for understanding.

Is there a refund policy? Up until the week prior, if you need a refund before the event starts you can get one.  Afterwards, your attendance and payment was factored into the budget and supplies have been purchased already.  Please give us some notice!

What is there to do at the house? While the major attraction is the 24/7 LAN Party, most of the time the house we select offers other things like home theater, pool/ping pong/air hockey, stuff like that.  Usually we are near attractions in the city. You’re an adult with money and cars and capable of entertaining yourself if the LAN, movies, and relaxing with friends is not enough.

What is there to do out and about?   There is usually 1 activity planned per day and participation is optional.  You can choose to go participate or just stay home and chill out at the all day LAN Party.  Activity costs are in addition to the room and board payment.  Normal events are golfing, shooting, hiking, etc.  The activity schedule is posted before the event.

What should I bring? While the houses are usually furnished quite well, it’s probably good to bring your own pillow, blankets, towels, and air mattress. Maybe your own chair if you have room. Money for expenses. If you want to play paintball, bring spare clothes for that.  A swimsuit if there is a hot tub or pool.  Your file server is welcome.  Whatever you bring to Quakecon probably, plus a Cat 5e or Cat 6 ethernet cable.  We usually ask for volunteers to bring certain items such as paper towels, TP, etc to reduce event costs.

How can I get more information?  Please request to join our Facebook discussion page at Quake on the Lake on Facebook.  This is a different FB group than the regular DGS discussion. There is also a channel for qotl in our Discord server.
